Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe shot dead at election rally
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital on Friday afternoon after being shot at while speaking at an election rally in the morning in the city of Nara, western Japan. The shooter was nabbed on the spot.

Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan and president of the Liberal Democratic Party from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. Abe had stepped down on health grounds.

TOKYO, July 8: Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died in hospital on Friday afternoon after being shot at while speaking at an election rally in the morning in the city of Nara, western Japan. The shooter was nabbed on the spot.

He suffered cardiopulmonary arrest. He was not showing any vital signs when brought in to the hospital.

The former Prime Minister died at a hospital in Kashihara city, Nara region. The hospital authorities at the Turner’s Medical University said that Abe was treated for more than 4 hrs and 30 min but the doctors were unable to save his life. He was bleeding profusely and blood transfusions were given to him but to no avail.

Abe, 67, was shot from 10 feet away, twice. One bullet had hit his chest to the left and the other in the neck. Abe collapsed on the stage in the middle of his speech. He was speaking on a street outside the railway station. He was bleeding as he was rushed to the hospital and appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest.

"As a mark of our deepest respect for former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, a one-day national mourning shall be observed (in India) on 9 July 2022," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said.
