Freighter for China too returns to Kolkata, third incident in a day

KOLKATA, July 6: In a third such incident, a Spicejet freighter to China too has returned to Kolkata.

The freighter (cargo carrier) flight to Chongqing, China, returned to Kolkata as its weather radar malfunctioned. This was the third such incident reported by Spicejet planes during the same day on Tuesday.

The first was a Delhi-Dubai flight that was diverted to Karachi as its fuel indicator displayed depleted fuel level. Soon after a Kandla-Mumbai flight made priority landing in Mumbai as its windshield cracked mid-air.

On July 5, 2022, SpiceJet Boeing 737 freighter was scheduled to operate from Kolkata to Chongqing. After take-off, the weather radar was not showing the weather. The PIC (pilot-in-command) decided to return to Kolkata. The aircraft landed safely at Kolkata," SpiceJet spokesperson told PTI on Wednesday.

This was the eighth mishap the airline faced in the last 17 days. The earlier glitches included a bird hit, oil leakage from an engine, a pressurisation problem and a faulty fuel indicator.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has summoned the airline management to seek its explanation why the airline has had so many flight cancellations due to technical glitches in a short period of time in quick succession.

The regulator had earlier warned the airline that it should not cut corners at the expense of the safety of passengers although the management had financial problems, according to TOI.

Losses due to covid shutdown and current spike in fuel prices caused by the ukraine crisis have adversely affected aviation business in India.

TAILPIECE: It is quite strange an airline reports serious glitches one after other leading to flight disruptions so frequently and everyone watches on! To facilitate an 'arrangement'? The people will never come to know!
