Policeman injured as explosives go off in Patna court room

The policeman had brought the box of explosives, which was seized from a Patna University hostel, as material evidence in a case.

PATNA, July 2: A policeman was injured in an explosion in a Patna court on Friday. The blast was caused by a box of explosives brought to the court by the police as evidence in a case hearing.

The startling explosion scared the court premises. The policeman had brought the case material from the police station and placed the box on the prosecutor's table for production during hearing.

The bomb materials were seized from a hostel room in the Patna University last week following which the case was filed by the Kadamkuan police against some students. Eight youths were arrested. The police had conducted raids in several hostels after receiving sensitive information. The materials seized included steel canes, 1100 gm of yellow gunpowder, tapes and 'sutli'.

The injured constable was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Police are investigating what triggered the explosion.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Umakant Rai's right hand was injured. Nobody else was injured, Patna SSP Manavjit Singh Dhillon said.

The explosives seized at the Patna hostel was gunpowder that could not be disposed of, and the explosion occurred due to heat caused by friction, NDTV quoted a police official.

"A few days ago, the gunpowder was recovered from a hostel in Patna University. We took it to the court for seeking permission for further probe. The blast happened as soon as it was kept on the premises. A police official sustained injuries & is out of danger," Pirbahore police station Incharge Sabi ul Haq said.

According to rules, any explosive to be brought to the court as evidence has to be first defused.

Last December, a huge explosion in Ludhiana court had damaged the building and left one dead and several injured. The blast took place in the washroom of the second floor of the district court complex. The explosion was so powerful that one of the walls was destroyed and the windows of cars parked on the ground premises shattered.
