WASHINGTON, June 21: Six people were killed and 42 injured in weekend mass
shootings in the US. The places of violence included a family barbecue, a park gathering
and a nightclub. The shootings were reported from nine cities.
On June 17 five people were injured in Chicago, IL, four in Baltimore, MD,
on June 18 five were injured in Pensacola, FL, two were killed and five injured
in San Antonio, TX, on June 19 five were injured in Grand Rapids, MI, five were
injured in Miami, FL, two were dead and two injured in Walterboro, SC, one dead
and three injured in Washington, D.C., on June 20 one was killed and eight were
injured in Harlem, NY.
At a park in the East Harlem, New York City, on Monday at 12:35 am, shooters
fired on a group of people having barbecue, killing one man. The dead was a 21-year
old basketball player. Six other men and two women were injured.
Minor shot in Washington
A minor was killed and three others, including a police officer, suffered injuries
in Washington, D.C., in shooting on Sunday evening.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) told Fox News that
four people were shot at at a Moechella event, including one police officer,
who did not return fire at the crowded area.
The event was unpermitted. It was outside a Juneteenth event and music festival
called “Moechella" at 6 pm. Moechella is described as an "advocacy festival
of culture'. There were hundreds of people in attendance who all stood in the
sidewalk.
Several illegal firearms were recovered by police officers earlier in the night
and at least one firearm had an extended magazine, said a source.
The event was shut down when police were alerted.
There were two skirmishes. The first event was a fight between two sets of
people following which the shooting incident occurred.
Broadcast station WDVM 25 said that police are looking for a Black male about
5’4? with curly hair wearing all black.
Meanwhile, a girl, 16, was shot on Sunday evening in the southeastern part
of Washington.
The shooting occurred in a residential area near the border with the US state
of Maryland.
The previous weekend, 10 mass shootings nationwide killed 10 people and injured
42.
The spike in weekend mass shootings began with the May 14 mass shooting at a
Buffalo, New York, supermarket that killed 10 people and the May 24 massacre
at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers
dead.
Till Monday, there have been 277 mass shootings in the US so far this year,
according to Gun Violence Archive.
