GUWAHATI, June 18: Thirty one people were killed in Assam and Meghalaya in
the past two days due to landslides and heavy rain. Twelve died in Assam and
19 in Meghalaya. The IMD has warned of more heavy to very heavy rain in both
the States. A red alert has been sounded in Arunachal Pradesh.
In Assam, over 19 lakh people were affected by flash floods. Over 3,000 villages
in the State are inundated. One lakh people have taken shelter in relief camps.
Twelve people died due to rain on Friday alone and 40,000 people were affected
by floods in Meghalaya. Eight persons from Mawsynram constituency in East Khasi
Hills died due to landslide. Five members of a family died due to a landslide
in Dangar. Three people lost their lives due to flash floods at Baghmara, while
one died due to landslide at Siju, in the Garo Hills district.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the State Government will extend ex
gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of deceased.
Four minors were killed and two injured in a landslide at Laitlarem village
under Mawphlang block in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall in caused a landslide in West Jaintia Hills district also. Several
roads were also damaged in the East Khasi Hills district.
Parts of the highway no 6 in Meghalaya caved in due to landslides and traffic
was blocked.
Four construction workers were killed in landslides in Guwahati.
Agartala, Tripura’s capital, has also reported a massive flash flood. More
than 2,000 people have been displaced in Sadar subdivision of West Tripura district.
