Covid infected, Sonia Gandhi admitted to Delhi hospital with nasal bleed

The Congress president was admitted to Ganga Ram hospital in west Delhi on Sunday as she developed complications of covid infection. She was to appear before the ED in the National Herald case on June 23.

NEW DELHI, June 12: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, 75, was admitted to a hospital in west Delhi on Sunday as she developed complications of covid infection. The doctors at the Ganga Ram hospital, where she has been admitted said that her condition is stable and she is under observation.

She was taken to the emergency section with a nasal bleed and has been shifted to a ward in the old building of the hospital. She has a case history of asthma and used to take treatment at the same hospital. She was accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Her son Rahul Gandhi has also reached the ward.

“Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital today owing to Covid related issues. She is stable and will be kept at the hospital for observation. We thank all the Congress men & women as also all well wishers for their concern and good wishes,” party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted.

Sonia had developed mild fever and other symptoms on the evening of June 1 and was tested positive for covid. She had isolated herself. It was also then reported that several other leaders were also infected with covid.

She was to appear before the ED (Enforcement Directorate) on June 8 for questioning in the National Herald case and despite the mild infection then she had stated that she would appear before the ED as scheduled on June 8.

However, later Sonia sought a change in the date and she was given June 23. Since now she has been admitted to hospital, she may have to seek a change in the schedule yet again.

"Congress President, Smt Sonia Gandhi has been meeting leaders and activists over last week, some of whom have been found Covid +ve. Congress President had developed mild fever & Covid symptoms last evening. On testing, she has been found to be Covid positive," Surjewala had tweeted on June2.

It was then stated that she will appear before the ED (Enforcement Directorate) on June 8 as stated earlier for questioning in the National Herald case. She and her son and party leader Rahul Gandhi had been summoned by the ED in connection with a money laundering case. While Sonia was asked to appear on June 8, Rahul was told to present himself on Wednesday. Since he was abroad he had sought a date after June 5.

They have been charged with cheating, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in the acquisition of the Associated Journals Limited, the company which had been running National Herald and several other newspapers.

"This is a strange case of money laundering where no money is involved. The case is more hollow than a pack of cards. We will face it. We are not intimidated. This reeks of vendetta, pettiness, fear and cheap politics," Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi had told reporters earlier.

The party has maintained that the case only involved the conversion of debt into equity to pay dues like salaries. It said the Government is trying to deflect attention from "real issues" like inflation.
