Seven covid deaths, 5,233 new cases reported in 24 hrs in India

NEW DELHI, June 8: In a sudden rise in cases, India reported seven covid deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry. There were a total of 5,233 new covid infections on Tuesday, taking the overall tally of cases in the country to 4,31,90,282.

The daily test positivity rate was 1.62 per cent and the weekly TPR was 0.91 per cent.

The active covid cases in the country rose to 28,857 and the death count to 5,24,715.

Among the States, Mizoram reported 15 new cases on Tuesday. Andhra Pradesh 79, Delhi 185, Goa 54, Gujarat 19, Haryana 20, Karnataka 37, Kerala 452, Maharashtra 1,003, Maharashtra's Thane district had 313 cases, Tamil Nadu 65, Telangana 76, and Bengal 20.

Within a 24-hour span, the covid tally in Maharashtra rose by over 80% with Mumbai and the satellite cities of Thane and Navi Mumbai accounting for more than 90% of previous day's caseload of 1,881 cases. In Mumbai the cases rose from 676 on Monday to 1,242 on Tuesday.

The daily tally in Mumbai city crossed the 1,000-mark after a gap of five months, with the previous highest single-day tally registered on January 29 (1,411 cases). Higher testing may have thrown up more cases, it was explained, ruling out a fourth wave.

Navi Mumbai registered 108 cases while Pune city was placed fourth with 82 cases.

The number of fresh covid cases have been steadily increasing in Karnataka. After a gap of three months, there were as many as 348 new cases in Karnataka, reported in a span of last 24 hours.

The Centre has already asked five States witnessing a sudden surge in covid cases to closely monitor emerging clusters, maintain adequate number of tests, and send samples from infected individuals for genome sequencing. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka were reporting higher number of daily cases.
