Sonia Gandhi tests positive for covid, ED date stands

The Congress president developed mild fever and other symptoms Wednesday evening and has isolated herself. The party has stated that she will appear before the ED in the National Herald case as per schedule on June 8.

NEW DELHI, June 2: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has covid, it was reported on Thursday. According to Congress leader and party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala, she developed mild fever and other symptoms Wednesday evening and has since tested positive for covid. She has isolated herself. It is also reported that several other party leaders are also infected with covid.

"Congress President, Smt Sonia Gandhi has been meeting leaders and activists over last week, some of whom have been found Covid +ve. Congress President had developed mild fever & Covid symptoms last evening. On testing, she has been found to be Covid positive," Surjewala tweeted.

However, it has been confirmed that she will appear before the ED (Enforcement Directorate) on June 8 as stated earlier for questioning in the National Herald case. She and her son and party leader Rahul Gandhi had been summoned by the ED in connection with a money laundering case. While Sonia was asked to appear on June 8, Rahul was told to present himself on Wednesday. Since he is abroad currently, he has sought a date after June 5.

They have been charged with cheating, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust in the acquisition of the Associated Journals Limited, the company which had been running National Herald and several other newspapers.

"This is a strange case of money laundering where no money is involved. The case is more hollow than a pack of cards. We will face it. We are not intimidated. This reeks of vendetta, pettiness, fear and cheap politics," Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi had told reporters earlier.

The party has maintained that the case only involved the conversion of debt into equity to pay dues like salaries. It said the Government is trying to deflect attention from "real issues" like inflation.
