MUMBAI, Dec 31: India's first Omicron death was reported from Maharashtra on
Friday. The patient died at the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's Yashwantrao
Chavan Hospital, in north-west Pune, on Tuesday. He was also suffering from
comorbidities, it is stated.
The immediate cause of death of the 52-year old man, therefore, has been attributed
to heart attack. He had a travel history traced to Nigeria and showed a positive
test result for Omicron covid. It is claimed he was also a diabetic.
“The death of the patient is due to non-covid reasons. Coincidentally, the
National Institute of Virology report revealed that he was infected with the
Omicron variant,” an official statement said.
Like in several other States, covid cases are surging in Maharashtra also in
a blistering speed. Maharashtra State Health Department said there were 5,368
new covid infections and 198 cases of the Omicron variant, taking the Omicron
tally to 450, on Thursday. Of the 5,368 new covid cases, 4,556 were in Mumbai.
The new deaths from covid in the last 24 hours were 22, which is not an alarming
departure from the month's average. However, of the 22, 15 deaths were reported
from Pune alone, although there were only 512 covid cases reported during the
day from there.
