Delhi-NCR schools allowed to reopen on Dec 18 as air quality improves
The announcement by the Delhi Government follows a recommendation by the CAQM in compliance of the apex court suggestions as the air quality has improved. However, all the schools in the National Capital Region may not open as some of them are of the view that they need time to make the arrangements to meet the requirements of the covid protocol as well. Therefore, some schools will resume classes only on Monday.

NEW DELHI, Dec 17: Following recommendation by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Delhi Government has announced reopening of the Delhi-NCR schools for Class VI to XII from December 18. The reopening is being phased out. But many schools plan reopening from Monday only as they need time to make the preparations.

However, the air quality in the region still remains 'very poor.' The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 339 on Friday. The weatherman has said the fog will continue and the minimum temperature will drop to 8 deg C.

Following a Supreme Court stricture on December 2 in view of the rising air pollution, the Government had closed the schools until further orders. Earlier also the schools were closed for two weeks till November 29 due to pollution.

The Supreme Court had last week noted that the air quality had started improving in the NCR and empowered the panel to take a call on opening of factories, schools etc after reviewing the situation. “The representations put forth by various project proponents and associations in the building and construction/ demolition sector, as also by the association of schools/educational institutions are under active examination and consideration by the commission and a decision on these would also be taken soon on or before December 17, based on the impact of the relaxations given above,” the CAQM’s submitted to the apex court this week.

Six thermal power plants have been allowed to resume operations due to higher power demand during winter. Only CNG and electric trucks and those carrying essential commodities will be allowed to enter Delhi. The essential industries were also to be allowed to function round-the-clock.
