Dharwad medical college campus shut as covid breakthrough infections climb to 182
The SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Dharwad in Karnataka was closed as covid cases mounted to 182 on Friday. Students and doctors have "breakthrough infections.” It had spread from two hostels after a freshers' party organised for the first year MBBS students, who hail from different States. The party was held at D Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra, located within the campus, on November 17. Genomic sequencing of samples is being done to ascertain if a new variant of covid is behind the infection spreading fast.

BANGALORE, Nov 26: Covid in Dharwad Medical College: The SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital in Dharwad in Karnataka was closed and the premises sealed on Friday as covid spread to 116 students and staff, including doctors, from two hostels where 66 students were tested positive on Thursday.

According to official sources, these were "breakthrough infections” (infection of fully vaccinated). Most patients were asymptomatic, while some had mild symptoms.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Nitesh Patil said the Out Patients Department (OPD) in the hospital is closed for three days. Nobody will be allowed into the in-patient wards.

Samples of infected students have been sent to Bengaluru for genome sequencing to rule out if new covid variants are behind the current infection which has spread very fast and affected a large number of people in a day's time. There are 3,500 employees in the campus.

Educational institutions in Dharwad have been closed as precaution.

The infection came to light when 66 students in two hostels tested positive for covid on Thursday. These students are believed to have been fully vaccinated. First year MBBS students, they hail from different States. They have mild symptoms and have been confined to a separate block.

Soon after 700 more swab samples were collected and 116 of them were found positive, taking the total to 182, on Friday. The new cases included doctors and the staff too.

The infection is suspected to have spread at a freshers' party organised for the first-year students . The party was held at D Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra, located within the college campus, on November 17.
