9 die in Vellore; more rains likely in TN, AP, Karnataka, Kerala
All roads around Tirumala-Tirupati temple complex were flooded and pilgrims were stranded. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala on Friday. Teams of NDRF and SDRF have been stationed in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Last week Tamil Nadu was devastated by rains and storms with Chennai and other places getting inundated, paralysing life. The weather office has said widespread rains with thunderstorms will continue in the regions on Saturday also.

CHENNAI, Nov 19: Nine members of a family - four children and five women - were killed when a building they were living in collapsed in torrential rains in Pernambut locality of Vellore district on Friday morning.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a relief of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased.

In Andhra Pradesh, the Tirumala-Tirupati temple areas were flooded and pilgrims were stranded. The four ‘maada streets’ near the temple and Vaikuntham were also inundated. Darshan was disrupted. The temple office had to be shut. The Renugunta airport was also inundated leading to cancellation of flights.

Weatherman has forecast thunderstorms with rains in the districts of Vellore, Krishnagiri, Thirupattur and Chengalpattu are likely during the day. The depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the coast between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh early on Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. More rains and winds with high speed for 24 hours are likely.

"The Depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-westwards and crossed north Tamil Nadu, adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Chennai during 3-4 AM on Friday, the 19th November 2021," the IMD said on its official Twitter handle.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and coastal Andhra Pradesh and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Rayalaseema and Karnataka on Friday.

Teams of NDRF and SDRF have been stationed in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.

In the last 24 hours, all the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu witnessed torrential rains and the State average ainfall was was 28.9 mm.

The weather office has said widespread rains with thunderstorms will occur over Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala on Saturday.

Early this month, Tamil Nadu was devastated by rains and storms with Chennai and other places getting inundated, paralysing life. Chennai witnessed the highest rainfall since the 2015 flood on November 7. The city recorded over 200mm of rainfall. Water entered homes in the city, roads were inundated and boats were requisitioned to evacuate residents in many areas.
