Three snow leopards die of covid in Nebraska zoo, five lions recover in Singapore
LINCOLN (Nebraska), Nov 16: Three snow leopards at the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Nebraska died of covid, zoo officials said.
"Our leopards, Ranney, Everest, and Makalu, were beloved by our entire community
inside and outside of the zoo," the zoo said in a Facebook post. "This loss
is truly heartbreaking, and we are all grieving together."
Two of the zoo's Sumatran tigers also showed symptoms and tested positive.
They have fully recovered. The zoo first reported that the tigers and snow leopards
tested positive on October 13.
"Given the substantial distance between the animals and visitors, the public
is not, nor has been, at any risk," the zoo said.
Animals at other zoos too have got covid. Eighty animals at the Cincinnati
Zoo and Botanical Garden received two doses of a covid vaccine prepared for
veterinary use.
A vaccine developed by Zoetis for animals has been authorized for experimental
use.
Three giraffes died at the Dallas zoo last month but experts are yet to confirm
if they died of covid.
