Rains, floods, landslides claim 104 lives in Nepal; 4 Slovenian tourists rescued

KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Flash floods and landslides caused by incessant rains in the past three days have claimed 104 lives in Nepal. Forty-one people have gone missing.

Meanwhile, four Slovenian tourists and their three Nepali trekking guides who were stranded at Tumling of Namkha Rural Municipality in north Humla due to heavy snowfall were rescued by security personnel on Thursday. The foreign tourists were rescued and shifted to Humla district's headquarters of Simikot, in Kamali Province, in the north-west of Nepal, by helicopter.

According to a Home Ministry statement, the highest number of flood deaths, 62, were reported from Province No. 1 in eastern Nepal, followed by Sudur Paschim Province in the west with 31 deaths and Karnali Province with seven deaths. Three persons were killed in Lumbini Province and one in Bagmati province.

The floods affected 20 districts across the Provinces.

In the eastern most Province 1, apart from the 62 deaths, 13 more have gone missing. The casualties included 14 in Ilam, 26 in Panchthar, seven in Dhankuta, eight in Sunsari, two in Udayapur and one each in Morang, Solukhumbu and Bhojpur.

In the Province of Sudur Paschim, a total of 31 deaths were reported - 16 in Doti, eight in Bajhang, four in Baitadi, two in Dadeldhura and one in Kailali.

In Karnali Province, of the seven deaths, six were in Humla and one in Kalikot. In Lumbini Province, two persons died in Pyuthan and one in Kapilvastu.

In Bagmati Province, Sindhuli district reported one death in the disaster.
