CEA KV Subramanian to lay down office, to return to academia

NEW DELHI, Oct 9: Chief Economic Advisor Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, whose tenure is ending on December 6, has announced he is leaving the office. He said he would return to academics, however, he will continue in the present position till the term ends.

The announcement has come just ahead of the next budgetary exercise that starts on October 12. Subramanian was the author of the last three Economic Surveys. Subramanian was appointed Chief Economic Advisor to the Government on December 7, 2018 after his predecessor Arvind Subramanian quit.

Subramanian, 50, had introduced concepts like ‘Thalinomics’, ‘V- shaped economy’ and ‘virtuous investment cycle’.

“Being provided the opportunity to contribute during a period of tremendous uncertainty and epochal change has been the lucky icing on the cake. So, while being conscious of the enormous privilege bestowed on me, I will happily return back to serving the country as a researcher after fulfilling my three-year commitment,” Subramanian, said in a statement on Friday.

“I am yet to encounter a more inspiring leader than Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His intuitive understanding of economic policy combines with an unmistakable determination to use the same to elevate the lives of common citizens,’’ he wrote.

“The momentous change in India’s economic thinking post the pandemic – inter alia embracing ethical wealth creation by empowering the private sector and economic recovery driven by government capital expenditure – bears testimony to his leadership. Alloyed with his keen listening, the freedom to speak one’s mind that he unstintingly encouraged enables such phenomenal change. On umpteen occasions, I have walked out inspired after a meeting with him – only a genuine leader can elicit such sentiment,” Subramanian noted.

An IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta alumnus, Subramanian was a professor at the Indian School of Business
