Thailand eases travel curbs; 'sandbox' stay on Phuket reduced
Thailand has relaxed covid restrictions allowing fully vaccinated tourists from any country to travel to Thailand. The period of mandatory 'sandbox' stay on Phuket was also reduced to one week. But it is advised to check with the concerned embassy the latest details before one embarks on a journey to Thailand to avoid disappointments.

BANGKOK, Oct 4: Thailand has relaxed the travel restrictions as covid infections are dropping. Now under a relaxed 'sandbox' programme, fully vaccinated tourists from any country can travel to Phuket, the world famous beach resort that used to lure the celebs in large numbers round the year boosting the country's economy. Moreover, the 'sandbox' period has also been reduced to a week from 14 days earlier.

Thailand's tourism industry has suffered heavy losses since the covid pandemic began. One-fifth of the country's revenue used to come from tourism. The tourist footfalls came down from 40 million to nil during the last two years with the arrival of covid. Ninety per cent of the hotels remain closed.

The 'sandbox' programme was launched in July. It has brought more than 38,000 visitors to the resort island Phuket, generating $66.67 million.

The 'sandbox' plan is a new model that allows vaccinated travelers to enter Thailand without quarantine. According to the programme, tourists arriving in Phuket will have to spend 14 nights in the island before they can move to any other Thai province. Transit via Bangkok is allowed for fliers.

Last week the Government slashed the 'sandbox' period to a week while announcing other relaxations in covid restrictions on travellers wanting to visit various places in Thailand.

The Government said unvaccinated children would be able to travel with their vaccinated parents.

The latest announcement allows previously excluded Indonesians and Malaysians to travel to Phuket.

Thailand plans to reopen five more destinations, including Capital Bangkok, using the 'sandbox' model from November. The four others are Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. This will be followed by opening of 20 more locations in December once vaccination rates increase.

Thailand, especially Phuket, has been a go-to destination for the celebs from across the world. Thailand offers pleasant beauties of scenic islands, endearing beaches and heritage temples. A vacation in Phuket is an exciting experience. It is one of the world's best beach resorts.

Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and Australia require no visa to enter Thailand but they will have to take a certificate of entry. For others, special tourist visas are issued from the respective embassies. An additional requirement of registration is a must for all.

All travellers to Thailand, except Phuket, must have a health insurance policy and produce a RT-PCR covid negative report of not more than 72 hours on arrival. One more RT-PCR test must be taken on arrival. And, one must also quarantine in recognised hotels for 10 days. All these are apart from full vaccination. A thorough enquiry with the concerned embassy is advised to avert disappointments.

Covid cases are currently falling fast in Thailand after a steep and sudden surge in April. About 20% of the people have been vaccinated. Museums, art galleries, historical sites, ancient monuments, spas, cinemas, pools, tattoo studios and sporting facilities have reopened with strict restrictions. A night curfew is in force at some places. Indoors and outdoors, mask is mandated. Most places are still empty and accommodation has become cheap.

Thailand has so far recorded 16,500 deaths and 1.6 million cases. Cases are now dropping.
