French troops eliminated Greater Sahara IS leader Al-Sahrawi: Macron
Sahrawi was wanted by the US over a deadly 2017 attack on US troops in Niger that killed four US Special Forces and four Niger troops. He was carrying a bounty of $5 million on his head. Last year six French aid workers and their Niger guides and drivers were killed.

PARIS, Sept 16: Adnan Abu Walid Al-Sahrawi, IS leader in Greater Sahara who had been behind the terror attacks in the region, has been killed by French troops, according to French President Emmanuel Macron. He was hit by a drone while he was driving a bike.

French officials called him "enemy No. 1" in the protracted anti- terrorism efforts in the Sahel.

Sahrawi was wanted by the US over a deadly 2017 attack on US troops in Niger that killed four US Special Forces and four Niger troops. He was carrying a bounty of $5 million on his head.

The “leader of the terrorist group Islamic State in the Greater Sahara was neutralised by French forces,” Macron said in a tweet on Thursday. “This is another major success in our fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel,” he said. Macron vowed to continue hunting down jihadist leaders to restore stability in the region.

The operation was carried out by France’s Barkhane force, a 5,100-man force active in the Sahel region for more than eight years.

The Islamic State in Greater Sahara (ISGS) group has been responsible for the deadly attacks in the region of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Last year six French aid workers and their Niger guides and drivers were killed.
