Jeff Bezos invests in Altos Lab research to reverse process of ageing
Scientific research on reversing the process of ageing using reprogramming technology is a flourishing business in the West. The latest to get attracted is Amazon's billionaire Jeff Bezos. He has reportedly invested heavily in a startup called Altos Lab. In fact, the topic is pretty old. Google had launched an initiative called Calico in 2013. The biological reprogramming technology's ability to recreate younger cells by reverting adult cells is quite promising, but is also fraught with the danger of frightening teratomas popping up.

WASHINGTON, Sept 8: Continuing with his mission to expand man's horizon, the world's richest man Jeff Bezos has invested in Altos Labs, a Silicon Valley startup which is searching for clue to prolong life and stop the ageing process, soon after his maiden effort to push the earthly boundaries into the unknown space.

Altos Labs is working on a biological reprogramming technology to facilitate longer life for man or reverse the process of ageing. Reprogramming technology is a method of reverting adult, specialized cells into stem cells. It has the potential to check degeneration. The controversial monkey-human hybrids of China was an offshoot of such research.

Altos is luring scientists to work on reprogramming to reverse the process of ageing of man with fabulous salaries.

Steve Horvath, a University of California geneticist, is one of the leading scientists joining the probe. He has tried to read ageing from molecular markers. Reprogramming has already attracted a Nobel prize.

Altos was incorporated earlier this year in the United States and the United Kingdom. It is setting up institutes in California, Cambridge and Japan.

The 57-year-old Bezos also invested in the startup San Francisco firm Unity Biotechnology, in 2018, the New York Post reported. It is researching on developing anti-ageing therapies. Bezos' net worth is $200 billion, according to Forbes.

Unity Biotechnology, according to its website, is working to develop a "new class of therapeutics to slow, halt or reverse diseases of ageing."

Bezos Expeditions reportedly has also stakes in Nautilus Biotechnology, Sana Biotechnology, Denali Therapeutics, Juno Therapeutics, Life Biosciences, Turn Biotechnologies, AgeX Therapeutics and Shift Bioscience.

In fact, the topic is very old. Google launched Calico, a research and development lab to study ageing, in 2013.

Huge investments are likely to flow in, says Institute for Ageing Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
