New Zealand reports first death from covid in six months
The woman patient died in a hospital in Auckland on Friday night. "The death is a deeply sad reminder of why the measures we are undertaking right now are so important," a worried Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said. "Going hard and early has worked for us before."

WELLINGTON, Sept 5: New Zealand, which has been a safe haven free from the pandemic, reported its first case of covid death in six months on Friday. The patient, a woman in her 90s, had underlying health conditions and could not receive a ventilator or intensive care support. She died on Friday night in a hospital in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city with a population of around 1.7 million (total population 5 million).

"The death is a deeply sad reminder of why the measures we are undertaking right now are so important," a worried Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said. "Our older New Zealanders and those with underlying health issues are by far the most at risk from the virus, and one of the reasons lockdowns are such an important tool to stop its spread,"she said. "Going hard and early has worked for us before," according to her.

A countrywide lockdown was clamped when an outbreak of the second wave occurred in mid-August after a gap of six months.

Twenty new cases of covid were reported from New Zeland on Saturday. A week before the daily case was 84. All of them were in Auckland. Six are in ICUs. The total number of active cases has gone up to 801 of which 784 are in Auckland and the rest in Wellington. The total number of infections since the pandemic began is 3,412 and the deaths 27.

A total of 30,57,343 tests have been conducted so far. In the last 24 hours 9,238 tests were done.

Caroline McEnlay, the director of public health, said the caes are dropping. "We are being successful in breaking the chain of transmission."

The total doses of vaccines administered to date is 38,50,611 of which first doses were 25,37,434 and second doses 13,13,176. In the last 24 hours a total of 76,812 doses were administered (first doses: 54,408; second doses: 22,404).
