New York floods: When Ida flash floods swamped New York City, killed 50 in Northeast US

COMMENT: We will do it next time, is what the new New York Governor meant when she said "We have to take action" to avert future disasters. It's Kathy Hochul even as New York City was sinking, the one who was probably found efficient before taking over as Governor! Despite warning by the National Weather Service as early as Tuesday that power-packed Ida after ravaging Louisiana in the south on Sunday is pummeling its way to the Northeast by Wednesday, there was no concern in any quarters of the flat- footed Government how it must respond. While prep for relief operations should have begun in advance instantly. The Guv was not aware that a Governor's job differs from what just you are as a person. The great city had to pay a heavy price.

The city's subways, streets, roads, rail tracks everything got submerged so forcefully and quickly by Wednesday evening that those living in basements could not escape as the torrents cascading down into those apartments just drowned the poor people inside in no time. They died crying for help, neighbours couldn't help.

NEW YORK, Sept 3: The New York City has been flooded and submerged. Sixteen people died. Cascading torrents filled subways, inundated roads, streets and airports, uprooted rail tracks, drowned those poor living in basements, damaged homes and other buildings, led to flights cancellations and power breakdown. The flash floods brought by Ida hurricane which made landfall in Louisiana in the south on Sunday and moved across the country to the northeast began devastating the region on Wednesday evening.

What went wrong? Despite the hurricane warnings, New York officials couldn’t prevent death and destruction. There were no timely relief operations despite the early warning by the weather service on Tuesday. The city's fragile system came under overwhelming stress and fell apart.

It was heart-rending, poor people died crying for help in basement apartments where torrents gushed in through windows and doors and drowned them. “It was impossible” to go and help. Subways were filled. In Central Parkway, Queens basement, water rushing down the stairs broke through a window and filled the house in monments. Six feet of water.

Roads were like streaming rivers where boats were seen rowing along. Flights from La Guardia Airport, Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport were affected badly. In Newark airport alone 370 flights were cancelled.

The death toll inflicted by Ida flooding in the Northeast was mounting on Friday even as the storm and the accompanying flooding began ebbing. New York and New Jersey announced more deaths on Friday, bringing the total number of those killed by the storm to nearly 50 across the four States in the Northeast; the other two States devastated are Pennsylvania and Connecticut. New Jersey recorded 25 deaths. Maryland and Virginia were also battered by the hurricane. Red Cross is providing shelter to people in New Jersey and New York.

Down-in-the-mouth remarks:

  • “It’s hard to even read those numbers (of dead), because those numbers are people.”
  • “It’s so hard when someone (dying) asks for help and you can’t help them.”
  • "A hooded delivery man waded through waist-deep water, clutching someone’s takeout order in a white plastic bag and wheeling his electric bicycle, while ..."
  • “Seeing this guy push his bicycle past these people in Mercedes to deliver Chinese food just turned my stomach.”
