Kabul airport attack: We'll hunt you down, Biden to terrorists

Responding to the Kabul airport bomb attack that killed 60 civilians and 12 American soldiers on Thursday, President Joe Biden vowed to avenge the deaths of Americans and make the terrorists pay. He said he has instructed the American military commanders to strike at the IS-K terrorists and their assets wherever they are. He also gave the military the option to have additional forces if needed to complete the evacuation of Americans and others from Afghanistan before the deadline of August 31. Gen Kenneth McKenzie, who oversees the evacuation, said “We will not be deterred by terrorists” and complete the mission.

WASHINGTON, Aug 26: Following the Kabul airport bomb attack that killed 60 civilians and 12 American soldiers on Thursday, President Joe Biden said he has instructed military commanders to strike at IS-K “assets, leadership and facilities.” The IS-K (Islamic State-Khorasan) has owned up the blasts.

"Know this," Biden said to the attackers. "We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay."

"We will respond with force and precision, at our time, at the place we choose and at the moment of our choosing," he said in his address to the nation.

"The lives we lost today were lives given in the service of liberty, the service of security, the service of others, in the service of America," he said from the White House, in the presence of the press. He said there was no evidence of Taliban's collusion with the IS-K.

Biden declared categorically that the US will evacuate its citizens and others from Afghanistan despite the attacks. He told the military that if the evacuation requires additional forces he will grant it.

Gen Kenneth McKenzie told a Pentagon news conference shortly before Biden's address to the nation that the attacks were carried out by two suicide bombings, followed by gunfire.

Gen McKenzie oversees the evacuation operation from his Florida headquarters.

He said 104,000 people have been airlifted out of Afghanistan, including nearly 5,000 Americans. About 1,000 Americans are there still to be evacuated. August 31 is the deadline as per the agreement with the Taliban. “We will not be deterred by terrorists,” he said. He said there were about 5,000 evacuees on the airfield Thursday awaiting flights.

The wounded Americans were evacuated from Afghanistan aboard Air Force C-17 transport planes.

Taliban has condemned the attacks but, however, said the US was in control of the airport when the attacks took place.

The killings were the first since February 2020 when the Trump administration entered into an agreement with the Taliban. The militants agreed to halt attacks on Americans as US agreed to remove all troops by May 2021. Biden said in April that all the forces would be withdrawn by September.
