150-year old Gartang Gali wooden bridge in Uttarkashi opens to tourists after repairs
The Gartang Gali wooden step bridge in Uttarkashi, damaged in the Indo-China war of 1962, has been opened to tourists after repairs. The restoration of the 136-m long, 150-year old bridge has cost Rs 65 lakh. It offers a mind-blowing view of Nelong valley. The bridge is along an ancient trade route between India and Tibet. Gartang Gali falls in the Gangotri National Park area. Tourists have to register themselves at Bhairav Ghati outpost.

DEHRA DUN, Aug 20: The 150-year old Gartang Gali wooden bridge in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district opened to tourists on Thursday. Falling in an ancient trade route to Tibet, the bridge offers a spectacular view of the Nelong valley.

The 136-metre skywalk bridge located at an altitude of 11,000 feet in Garhwal Himalayas, which was damaged during the Indo-China war of 1962, has been undergoing restoration work. It has been repaired at a cost of Rs 65 lakh. About 110 km from Uttarkashi town, the bridge is said to have been built by Peshawar Pathans. The Bhotiya (Bhutia) nomadic tribe, especially, ferried their goods on yaks through this route. Wool, jaggery and spices used to be transported to Tibet.

Tourists intending to visit the Gartang Gali bridge have to register themselves at Bhairav Ghati outpost. They have to follow the covid guidelines. Tibet can be seen from here.

As the Nelong valley comes under the Gangotri National Park, night stay is barred. Snow leopard, blue sheep and musk deer are seen here.

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun, 200 km from Uttarkashi town.

The nearest railway stations are at Dehradun and Rishikesh, both 200 km away from Uttarkashi town. .

Taxi and bus services are available from Dehradun and Rishikesh to Uttarkashi. There is regular service of State transport buses between Uttarkashi and Rishikesh/Dehradun. Local Transport Union Buses also operate between Uttarkashi and Dehradun (200 km) and Uttarkashi and Haridwar (250 km). Gangotri is 100 km from Uttarkashi headquarter. Gartang Gali is 110 km from Uttarkashi town.
