Haitian quake death toll 1,297; 14,000 houses destroyed
Haiti's hospitals, swamped with thousands of people wounded and fractured in the quake, are facing a severe shortage of medical supplies even as the searches continued and the death toll is rising rapidly. Tens of thousands of houses, churches, hotels, hospitals and schools were destroyed or badly damaged. A potential deluge from an approaching storm is also threatening the survivors living on the streets in the open.
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Haiti), Aug 16: The death toll in the earthquake that struck off the coast of south-western Haitian peninsula early Saturday morning reached 1,297 on Sunday and is still rising. The quake was of a magnitude of 7.2.

In 2011 too Haiti had suffered an earthquake. The problem- ridden impoverished Caribbean nation of 11 million people had just faced the tragedy of its President Jovenel Moise's assassination on July 7 last and, on the other side, is battling the covid pandemic. The epicentre of Saturday's tremor was about 125 km west of the Capital of Port-au-Prince, the US Geological Survey said.

Around 14,000 houses were destroyed and churches, hotels, hospitals and schools were badly damaged. Rescuers deployed excavators to lift rubbles to look for life.

Dominican Republic, Mexico and Colombia rushed food and medicines. Boats and helicopters were being used to bring aid. The US despatched 65 rescue teams, aid and equipments. There are significant logistics challenges in approaching the affected areas. Helicopters are ferrying injured to hospitals and relief materials to the devastated areas.

By Monday morning there were 3,700 injured in the hospitals in the seafront town of Les Cayes. As healthcare facilities were overwhelmed with the injured, doctors had to treat them on mattresses on roadside in the city of Jeremie in the north-west. Survivors slept in the open through Sunday night. .

The hospitals are reported struggling to deal with the thousands of injured. Medical supplies are in shortage supply. The death toll continued to rise. Prime Minister Ariel Henry has declared a month's emergency. People are leaving the area fearing aftershocks. Those staying back are putting up in tents.

There is also a warning of an approaching tropical storm (Tropical Depression Grace), likely to land on Monday night, posing a threat to those survivors living on the streets.

Official sources had said on Sunday the death toll in the earthquake was 1,297. Hundreds of people were missing and more than 2,800 were injured till Sunday. The death toll was at just over 300 on Saturday. Rescue workers were pulling out survivors from the debris of collapsed buildings.

Haiti is currently plagued by political instability, gang war, economic problems and the covid pandemic. The chances of presidential elections next month look remote considering the present circumstances.
