Second largest US employer, Amazon has one worker for every 350 Americans
Amazon employs 9,50,000 workers in the US, and globally 1.31 m, while Walmart has 1.6 m American workers on its rolls, the latter becoming the largest employer. Amazon pays a minimum wage of $15 per hour while the Federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour. The company’s demand for more employees remains high, and the labour market has become competitive.

SEATTLE (WA), Aug 1: Ecommerce giant Amazon employs nearly one million workers in the US, only second to the largest employer Walmart, which has 1.6 m American workers on its rolls.

This translates to one Amazon employee for every 153 US working people as, according to a US employment report, 145.8 m employees constitute the non-farm work force in the country, or one Amazon employee for every 350 Americans, the US population being 332 m.

While Amazon employs 9,50,000 workers in the US, its global employment figure is 1. 31 m. The company employs more Americans than the entire construction industry that has 8,73,000 people working in the sector.

While Walmart has one worker for every 91 US workers, making it the largest employer in the US with a workforce of 1.6 m, McDonald's employs more people but it is run on franchise although it has a total strength of 2 m globally. McDonald's directly employs only 50,000 in the US.

According to the company report, Amazon had registered $221 b in sales so far in the year 2021.

The US employment report says 145.8 m employees constitute the non-farm work force in the country, which has a population of 332 m.

There was an addition of 64,000 to the Amazon work force during the second quarter. The total number of workers does not include thousands of people on contractual jobs like delivery drivers, NBCNews said. The report quoted Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky saying the company’s demand for more employees remains high, turning the labour market competitive.

Since 2018, the company has been paying a minimum wage of $15 per hour while the Federal minimum wage now is $7.25 an hour.

The company said in its release on second quarter results: "Over the past 18 months, our consumer business has been called on to deliver an unprecedented number of items, including PPE, food, and other products that helped communities around the world cope with the difficult circumstances of the pandemic. At the same time, AWS has helped so many businesses and governments maintain business continuity, and we’ve seen AWS growth reaccelerate as more companies bring forward plans to transform their businesses and move to the cloud,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO.
