Judge killed in hit-and-run: Dhanbad coal mafia suspected
Justice Uttam Anand was on his usual jogging on the sidewalk of a road near the Magistrate Colony in Dhanbad early in the morning on Wednesday when he was hit by a tempo. A CCTV clip shows the vehicle swerving to the sidewalk to the left, hitting him and escaping. He was taken to the hospital by passersby where he was declared dead and the body remained unidentified for several hours. A coal mafia whose case he was hearing is suspected.

RANCHI, July 29: Dhanbad Additional District Judge (ADJ) Uttam Anand was killed in a hit-and-run incident while on a morning walk in the city on Wednesday morning.

Judge Uttam Anand was jogging on the sidewalk near the Magistrate Colony in Dhanbad when a tempo swerved to the sidewalk, hit him and drove away. He fell down and was taken to the hospital by passersby where he died. The body remained unidentified for several hours.

In the meantime his family made a police complaint that he had gone for jogging in the morning at 5 as usual and that he had not returned yet at the time of complaint, 7 am.

It is reported that of late judge Uttam Anand was hearing two cases relating to a coal mafia in Dhanbad and one of the accused was refused bail by him.

As the news reached the Supreme Court, Chief Justice of India NV Ramana asked the High Court of Jharkhand to immediately take up the matter.

Meanwhile, the advocates have demanded a thorough investigation by the CBI as, they alleged, the incident underlines a serious threat to the judicial machinery and judicial independence in the country.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has asked the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the killing of judge Uttam Anand.

An SIT has been formed to probe the case. The Giridih Police has arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, which they said was a stolen one.

“I have constituted an SIT led by the city SP who will look into all possible reasons. The CCTV footage and all related aspects would be analysed and identify the vehicle. We have respected the victim’s family members to file a complaint and we will register an FIR,” Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjeev Kumar told Hindustan Times.
