6 Assam cops killed in border clash with Mizoram: CMs exchange barbs
CRPF has been deployed at the point of dispute at Assam- Mizoram border in Cachar. Sixty five people were also injured. Forty of them were admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital. Mizoram police used 'light machine guns' on Assam Police, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged. The conflict comes just 48 hrs after a meeting of North-East Chief Ministers called by the Centre.

GUWAHATI, July 27: Six Assam policemen were killed in a border clash with Mizoram police on Monday. CRPF has been deployed at the point of dispute.

Sixty five people were also injured, including cops. Forty of them are admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital. The Assam Police have withdrawn from the border posts which have been handed back to CRPF personnel.

Tension has been building up for some time at the border between Lailapur village in Assam's Cachar district and neighbouring Vairengte village in Mizoram's Kolasib district. The flare-up was triggered by an encroachment drive by the Assam Police, it is alleged.

Two companies of CRPF, one each from 119 Battalion and 225 Battalion, have been deployed along Assam-Mizoram border where the clashes broke out over a long-standing land dispute.

Mizoram police used 'light machine guns' on Assam Police, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged.

On the other hand, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said needless injuries could have been avoided. He said he "strongly condemns unjustified act" of the Government of Assam in this "intrusion and aggression." The Mizoram Home Minister said 200 Assam Police personnel overran the CRPF police post near Vairengte auto-rickshaw stand.

"Assam side has been persuaded to go back. We are trying to convince the Mizoram side, too, to retreat. The situation at this moment appears tense but under control," sources in CRPF told India Today.

The Assam Chief Minister tweeted, "I am deeply pained to inform that six brave jawans of @assampolice have sacrificed their lives while defending constitutional boundary of our state at the Assam-Mizoram border. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families."
