Louisianans' last chance to win a 'Shot At a Million' vaccine lottery
Louisiana's lottery programme to attract the citizens to take the covid vaccination has paid dividends, there was a 14 per cent increase in vaccinations in the first week after Gov. John Bel Edwards introduced the 'Shot At a Million' scheme last month. Those vaccinated with at least one dose of a covid vaccine stand a chance to win prizes ranging from a hundred thousand dollars to one million, in cash and scholarships. However, the new Delta variant of covid is spreading fast.

BATON ROUGE (Louisiana), July 25: As the Delta variant of covid is spreading in several States in the US and the vaccine resistance is creating a division in the country, of those vaccinated and those not, Louisiana recently launched an innovative programme to attract more citizens to the booth.

And that worked. Louisiana registered 14 per cent increase in vaccinations in the first week after Gov. John Bel Edwards introduced the 'Shot At a Million' lottery programme in June.

The residents getting vaccinated have a chance to win four cash prizes of $100,000, nine of $100,000 in scholarships and one prize of $1 million - a total of 14 Louisianans will get the prizes.

Edwards had announced the launch of the campaign at a press conference on June 17. He had said the vaccinated Louisianans will win scholarships and cash prizes. Louisianans who have got the vaccine can register online at ShotAtAMillion.com. Residents who do not have access to the internet or who have questions can call the toll-free hotline at 877-356-1511 to register.

He had said Louisianans who have taken at least one dose of the covid vaccine (regardless of when they were vaccinated) and are age 18 or older may enter to win one of four $100,000 prizes and the grand prize of $1 million. Louisianans who have taken at least one dose of the covid vaccine and are between the ages of 12 and 17 may enter to win one of nine $100,000 scholarships. Winners are announced two days after the drawing.

Four weekly drawings were to take place and a final grand prize drawing on August 6. Overall awards will total $2.3 million, to 14 winners, paid using Federal covid outreach dollars, it was reported.

The Govt announced the first winners of its covid vaccine lottery on July 16. Now the last two draws remain. The schedule of drawing was: Enter by July 9, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CDT for the July 14 drawing; Enter by July 16, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CDT for the July 21 drawing; Enter by July 23, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CDT for the July 28 drawing; Enter by July 30, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CDT for the August 4 drawing; Enter by July 31, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CDT for the August 6 Grand Prize Drawing.

About 1.8 million — or 39 per cent — Louisianians have got at least one dose of the vaccine.

The number of cases of Delta variant of covid in Louisiana has been rising since mid June. Last year more than 2,000 patients in Louisiana were hospitalized at a time and dozens of people died each day.

A final grand prize drawing is set for August 6. The programme follows a spike in the number of Delta cases in Louisiana and other States.
