Mahabaleshwar, a hill station, is a holy place of great tourist interest
Mahabaleshwar the famous hill station is named after Mahabaleshwar, the Lord, another name for Shiva. The Mahabaleshwar temple has a 6-ft tall Shiva linga, believed to have been brought by Ravana straight from Kailash in the Himalayas, the abode of Lord Shiva. It is situated 5 hrs by road south of Mumbai. Picturesque with green forests, valleys and rivers, Mahabaleshwar is a holy place of great tourist interest.

MUMBAI, July 24: Mahabaleshwar was reopened to visitors by the Maharashtra Government on June 21 as the covid cases started declining. However, the covid protocol will be observed. A negative Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) or RT-PCR Test report is a must to stay at the hill station. For tourists coming for a day's visit covid negative report is not a must, it is must for those who stay at a hotel, officials clarified.

A famous tourist destination, Mahabaleshwar is a hill station and a holy place situated in the Western Ghats, south of Mumbai in Maharashtra's Satara district. It is picturesque and serene with green forests, valleys and rivers. Its elevation is 1,353 m. The temperature ranges from a minimum of 10 deg C to a maximum of 32 deg C. Best time to visit is December to February.

The places to see here are Arthur’s Seat, Kate's Point, Pratapgad Fort, Lingmala Waterfall, Venna Lake, Panch Ganga, a confluence of five rivers, and the Mahabaleshwar temple itself. The place is named after Lord Mahabaleshwar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. There is a 6-ft tall Atma Linga installed in the temple, believed to have been brought from the Lord's abode in Kailash by Ravana.

Mahabaleshwar is known for its strawberries. Honey and Kolhapuri footwear are items visitors can buy.

It takes a couple of days to go round Mahabaleshwar. Most hotels are located conveniently on Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani Road. Lonavala is costlier. For Mumbaikars this a hill station next door. It is 260 km from Mumbai and it takes 5 hrs by road. The destination receives a large number of footfalls. A lot many tourists come from Pune as it takes just two hours and 100 km drive by road. There is a pollution tax on entry. Buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and horses are available for local travel. This was a summer capital of Bombay for the British.
