US-donated Moderna vaccine to arrive in a day or two
Cipla has been given the approval for importing the US-donated vaccines. However, nothing is known about the commercial supplies. The Government had waived the bridging trials for foreign vaccines which have been cleared in developed countries like the US. Pfizer and Moderna had asked for indemnity from liability in case of any adverse effect of the vaccine but India has not granted indemnity to any vaccine-maker.

NEW DELHI, July 4: The consignment of Moderna’s covid vaccine, a donation from the US under the WHO's COVAX initiative, is likely to arrive in India in a day or two. The quantum of vials has not been confirmed.

The US vaccine is being imported by Indian drug manufacturer Cipla, which has been given the regulatory approval for importing the donated vaccine. However, there is no final word yet on commercial supplies and import agreements although the Government had waived the bridging trials for foreign vaccines last Tuesday if it is cleared for emergency use in developed countries like the US.

The “Government of India is hopeful that the first batch of the (donated US vaccine) Moderna vaccines will reach the nation in the next couple of days", reported CNN-News18.

The Moderna vaccine has an efficacy of 94.1% protection against covid while Sputnik has 91 per cent, Covaxin 77.8 per cent and Covishield 74 per cent.

Pfizer and Moderna had asked for indemnity from liability in case of any adverse effect of the vaccine but India has not granted indemnity to any vaccine-maker.

"We are going through talks. There has been an exchange of information and inputs. There has been a back-and-forth on that. Intensive meetings were held last week. We are awaiting feedback from Pfizer," Dr VK Paul, who heads the Centre's covid task force, told reporters.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla had said recently that the Indian approval is in the "final stages".

US President Joe Biden had said, “by the end of June, the United States will share 80 million doses of our vaccine supply with the world". On 3 June, US vice president Kamala Harris telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other world leaders, to explain the Biden administration’s plans to donate 25 million of a possible 80 million doses of anti-covid-19 vaccines.
