MORBI (GUJARAT), Aug 8: The unusual sight of a newly dug, 18-foot-deep agricultural well on the farm of resident Pranjivan Sadariya in Virparda village, Morbi taluka in Gujarat, creating spontaneous, tide-like waves captured global social media attention and prompted an official Government investigation. The study found the viral "mystery shaking well" is a fascinating hydrogeological phenomenon while villagers initially feared seismic activity. As fresh water forced its way into nearby underground rock pores in heavy upstream rainfall, it squeezed and displaced trapped air pockets which in turn escaped through the well, causing the rippling and sloshing and generating continuous standing waves known scientifically as a seiche. Lake Erie in North America is an example of winds creating massive seiches.
