Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary
Bharatpur is world famous for its bird sanctuary called Keoladeo Ghana National Park. It is situated 55 km from Agra.
The park is one of the best bird sanctuaries in the world. It was the hunting ground for the rajas of Bharatpur. It has a wide variety of exotic birds like the geese from China. Siberian cranes come here every winter. Bharatpur Palace is a magnificent palace integrating a fusion of Mughal and Hindu architecture. It has a museum inside, displaying ancient exhibits. The Lohagarh Fort with its iron structure was built by Maharaja Suraj Mal, who also founded Bharatpur.
There are three palaces inside the fort.
EXCURSION
Deeg (32 km): This was the summer resort of the rajas, the so-called second Capital. It has magnificent palaces and beautiful gardens. Sight-seeing: The forest department arranges mini buses for going round the sanctuary.
HOW TO REACH: The nearest airport is in Agra, 55 km. Trains connect Bharatpur with Delhi, Mumbai, Agra and Jaipur. There is bus service to all major towns. Cycle-rickshaw and tonga are local transport.
