May 31, 2010 | Teenaged Arjun Bajpayee conquers Mount Everest | Noida (Uttar Pradesh): Arjun Bajpayee, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Noida city has become the youngest person to climb the Mount Everest at the age of 16. After spending two months
in Nepal and the strenuous expedition, Arjun returned to an overwhelming reception at his
home on Monday. Later, he went to his school and shared his experiences with his
schoolmates. Bajpayee said that it was his dream to become a world-class mountaineer
that prompted him to scale Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. "I got
inspiration from Colonel Jyot Singh Dhillon. He used to tell me stories of other
mountaineers and he also encouraged me. This inspired me to climb the Everest,"
said Arjun Bajpayee. Earlier, he had attended two mountaineering courses where
the instructors spotted his potential and convinced his father that he is ready
for the Herculean task. Though he faced many problems during the climb, this did
not deter his morale. "The major problem in climbing Mount Everest is of high
altitude. And at a certain height, you start getting hypoxic, nauseous, your stomach
muscles become weak; you are not able to digest properly. Despite these problems
you have to climb. So facing these problems at such a high altitude is really
tough," admitted Arjun Bajpayee. He was a member of the expedition that included
world-famous mountaineer Apa Sherpa, a veteran of scaling the mighty Mount Everest
20 times. |
