November 4, 2009 | Unique boat festival mesmerises audience in Goa | Sanquelim (Goa): A grand and colourful boat festival was organised here recently to mark Tripura Poornima (Kartik Purnima) or Full Moon Day. The festival was organised by the Director of Art, Culture and Communication and Tourism and Development Corporation
in association with Sankhali Deepavali Utsav Committee (festival committee). Thousands
of devotees from all parts of state turned up on the bank of holy river Valvanti
to witness the gala celebrations mark with fire work and illumination. Specially
crafted and illuminated miniature replicas held everyone captive. An effigy of
demon Tripurasur was also burnt to remember the release of gods and humans from
demon Tripurasur. State Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has said that this unique
show would provide a platform to boat artists to showcase their creativity. "We
get the tremendous response for this festival. People are coming from different
parts of state plus we get even tourists, special trips are being arranged for
this festival. The young generation gets involved in making this boat show, which
is considered as the best boat shows in state. I am sure that this will encourage
more and more artistes also to show their ability," he added. Also known by the
name of Deva Diwali, this event has grown into a state level competition for the
most artistic and technically superior boat. The Government of Goa has declared
this as State Festival. |
