White water rafting attracts tourists to J-K

Pahalgam: White water-rafting is fast emerging as a popular sport in Jammu and Kashmir with tourists and adventure sport-lovers thronging Pahalgam town to enjoy the experience. The aquatic adventure sport is attracting domestic as well as international tourists. "We enjoyed a lot. As the raft5 goes up and down in the rapids, it's a really wonderful experience of my life. After visiting Pahalgam, this is one such thing which I'll never forget in life," said Deepak Kumar, a tourist from Delhi . White water rafting in Pahalgam starts in the month of June, but the tourist rush this year has caused tour operators to take bookings much earlier. Pahalgam used to have only 10-13 boats sailing along the ice-cold white waters of Lidder Nallah (stream), but now their number has touched 40-45 to cater to the needs of tourists interested in this adventure sport. "There are many rapids in the stream, because of which tourists are all drenched in water. As the raft moves through a rapid, it goes up and down and water passes over the head of people sitting in the raft, which they enjoy. The business is good and it's a good season for the arrival of tourists," said Irshad Ahmed, an operator.
