Typhoon lashes South China: 20 dead; 500 tourists trapped in Guangdong
HONG KONG: Over 500 tourists staying in hotels in Guangdong's Fangji island were reportedly trapped after the Typhoon Mujigae accompanied by gales and downpours ripped through south China on Sunday. Attempts to evacuate them were disrupted by persisting strong winds.

The typhoon has claimed a total of 20 lives. The densely populated Guangdong province took the brunt. Mujigae made landfall at the coastal city of Zhanjiang at 2 pm, packing a speed of 216 kph.

Xinhua reported that Guangzhou and Foshan were the two Chinese cities badly devastated. At sea, several fishing boats went missing. The nearby Guangxi region was also affected.

The Civil Affairs Department of Guangxi said the typhoon has affected 870,000 people. Over two lakh people were evacuated. Even as it slammed into the southern coast, the typhoon gave birth to a series of tornadoes. Wielding high power, it is the 22nd typhoon of the year to wreak havoc in south China.

Xinhua said seven people died in typhoon-triggered tornados in Guangdong: three in Panyu district on the outskirts of Guangzhou, and four in Shunde district of Foshan.

Guangdong provincial civil affairs department said in a press release Tuesday night that another seven died in landslides caused by the typhoon - four in Xinyi city, one in Guangning county and two in Luoding city. Three fishermen died in a pair of boat accidents in the stormy sea. Four fishermen are missing.

In neighboring Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, one person died after he was knocked out by a tree falling in the strong gales. The regional government said that nearly 19 lakh people in Guangxi suffered losses from the typhoon and 417 homes were destroyed. In Guangdong province, 35 lakh people were affected, the civil affairs department said.

It said at least 3,374 homes toppled and 282,700 hectares of cropland were damaged, causing a loss of 3.65 billion US dollars.

Power supply infrastructures were damaged in parts of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. There was blackout in nearly 50 lakh households.

On its way to the Chinese coast, Typhoon Mujigae had unleashed a sea of devastation across the Philippines. Two hundred fishermen in the Philippines had been reported missing. The provinces of Pangasinan and La Union were the worst hit.
