Ola cab driver arrested for assaulting Finnish woman in Jaipur
JAIPUR: An Ola cab driver was arrested here on Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting a Finnish woman.

The victim (24), working at a company here, booked the taxi on phone to go back to her accommodation from a hotel where she had gone to attend an office party. The incident happened late on Thursday night, according to reports.

The driver allegedly pulled her back into the taxi whe she was getting down at her place.

The woman with her colleagues filed an FIR at the Shastri Nagar police station. The driver, Suryadeep Poddar, 25, has been arrested and will be produced in the court on Saturday. He hails from Bihar and has been staying in the city for some years. The cab was also seized

The woman from Finland has been in the city for a month. She was undergoing a three-month internship at a private firm.

Meanwhile, Ola said in a statement on Friday that it suspended the driver “within minutes of receiving feedback from the customer this afternoon and have shared this information with her as well”.

Ola said in the statement, "We have suspended the services of the said driver from the Ola platform within minutes of receiving feedback from the customer this afternoon and have shared this information with her as well. We will continue to offer all support and additional information required by the customer and the authorities, to investigate this further."

There have been several similar incidents involving cab drivers in the past.

In another case, three persons were on Friday sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment by a court here for raping a Japanese tourist on the Ajmer highway in February last. The accused - Ajit Singh Choudhary, Abrar and Wahid - were awarded a 20-year imprisonment under Section 376 D (gang rape). Three others - Ramveer, Shivraj and Ramraj - were sentenced to two years of imprisonment and were asked to pay a Rs 5,000 fine. Three others - Dharmveer, Ravindra and Rajveer - were acquitted.

The Japanese woman left India for home in April after recording her statement. This was the second case of assault on a Japanese visitor in less than a year.

Early this week, another woman from Finland and 26 other revellers were arrested from a birthday party at a farmhouse here. Drugs like smack were found at the venue.
