Incidence of attacks on foreigners mounting; Japanese found dead in Varanasi
Varanasi: A 24-year old Japanese national's body was found partially hanging from a pole on a ghat on the banks of the Ganga here on March 14. As the body was touching the ground, the Bhelupur police suspect it to be a case of murder and are investigating. Atomu Amajato belonged to Nagasaki city in Japan.

His bag lying beside his body contained $10, a calculator, two cigarettes, medicines and a planning calendar, the police said. The Japanese embassy has been informed.

Atomu had come here from New Delhi on March 13 by Marudhar Express. People had seen him at the ghat nearby on Thursday evening, according to the police.

Earlier, an American national was found dead at a hotel in Assi Ghat on March 7. Albert, 56, reportedly died of drug overdose.

Another Japanese tourist, Naga Keisuke (29), was found dead in his room in a guest house in Munshi Ghat here on October 25, 2010.

German student robbed in Delhi

In another incident involving a foreigner, in Delhi, a German student was molested and robbed by an autorickshaw driver and his accomplice on March 8. A complaint has been registered at the Barakhamba Road police station. She could not find the culprits in an identification parade of 100 autorickshaw drivers the police arranged. The woman, aged 23, was undergoing her internship in a management course in Delhi. She had been staying in a South Delhi colony for the past few months and had come to Connaught Place area from where she hired the auto in the evening to return home.

On January 13 last, a Danish tourist, 51, was gang-raped and robbed by eight anti-social elements in Paharganj, near Connaught Place, in central Delhi.
