March 5, 2010 | Budding designers compete at fashion event in Bangalore |
Bangalore:Budding fashion designers showcased their collections and competed on the ramp of Wills Lifestyle Fashion Contest, which is being held here on Thursday. The theme of the contest was 'Yesterday, Today
and Tomorrow' and was organized with an aim to provide a platform to young designers.
About forty designers from all over the country showcased their collections. Anjan,
a finalist, said that his collection was based on the economic recession. "For
sustainability, I used second-hand stuff, because I was innate in crunch. I used
second-hand stuff, I used a lot export surplus waste that was there in the 'katran'
(unused strips of cloth) market in Delhi. You get a lot of stuff, there is so
much of over-producing that is going on, but so little is saved," he said. The
Gothic theme made a comeback on the ramp with another designer, Misty, basing
her collection on it. "I took the theme as Gothic, as Gothic was an era in the
history which is also perceived as negative, or something horror or scary. So
I took the beautiful elements of the Gothic era, inspired from the architectural
beauty, so I designed very nice evening-wear collection for women, and mostly
use surplus design techniques and made the garments in pieces so that it gives
the freedom to the wearer to wear according to what they like,' she said. The
jury panel included famous designers Manoviraj Khosla, Raj Shroff and Amit Sinha.
"I am looking at in the sense of designs and new sensibilities towards designs.
That's the most important thing. At the end of the day, it is about fashion, it
is about designer," said Khosla. Four finalists have been selected for the finale,
which will be held in New Delhi on March 11. They would also get a chance to showcase their collection in Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week this year. |
