NEW DELHI, Jan 25: The Indian Government is buying 21 MiG-29 and 12 Sukhoi-30MKI more fighter aircraft from Russia. The Government says it will replenish the depleting fleet of the air force.
For the Russian fighters, orders will be placed with their Rosoboronexport, according to a report in Business Today. There are already 59 MiGs and 259 Sukhois with the Indian air force, the latter costing around $15 billion.
The cost of the 12 Sukhoi and 21 MiG-29s combat aircraft has been estimated at around Rs 5,000 crore.
The MiG-29s is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed to shoot enemy aircrafts in beyond-visual range.
In 2016, India signed a controversial agreement with France to procure 36 Rafale jets at a cost of around Rs 58,000 crore. Delivery was delayed because of coronavirus shutting down Dassault's assembly unit.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) also approved the "purchase" of our own 83 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas manufactured by our own Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) earlier!
