US air travel curbs: Trump disposes, Biden imposes
After Trump lifted the air travel curbs, Biden's press secretary Jen Psaki said, "On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift the restrictions."

WASHINGTON, Jan 18: The new US administration will restore the restrictions on travellers from Europe and Brazil incumbent President Donald Trump lifted on Monday with effect from January 26.

Trump on Monday lifted the restrictions on travellers arriving from Europe and Brazil with effect from January 26. Earlier all incoming air passengers from these countries - Europe since last March and Brazil since May - needed to produce a covid-negative test certificate taken before departure.

"This action is the best way to continue protecting Americans from COVID-19 while enabling travel to resume safely," Trump said in a statement released by the White House.

Immediately after the White House announced its decision to lift the ban from January 26, President-elect Joe Biden's press secretary Jen Psaki said on Twitter: "On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26. In fact, we plan to strengthen public health measures around international travel in order to further mitigate the spread of Covid-19." With "more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel," she added.

The US had imposed travel restrictions on Europe last March and on Brazil in May.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) issued a press statement saying all incoming international passengers will have to carry a covid-negative test certificate taken within 72 hours of departure with effect from January 26. It can be PCR or antigen test. Moreover, the travellers will have to wear face mask and keep physical distancing.

Joe Biden will take office at around midday on Wednesday.
