Poonawalla takes a jab of Covishield on inaugural day of vaccination
The first 100 million doses will be sold to the Indian Government at Rs 200 per dose, while the market price will be Rs 1,000 per dose, said Poonawalla.

PUNE, Jan 16: In order to instill courage in the countrymen and dispel any apprehensions over the vaccines produced indigenously in India for covid, the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India, Adar Poonawalla, has released a video of his taking the vaccination, on Twitter. His staff of the institute followed him.

Likewise, the Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Randeep Guleria, also led his medical staff in the vaccination drive by taking the jab himself.

"I wish India & Sri @narendramodi ji great success in launching the world’s largest COVID vaccination roll-out. It brings me great pride that #COVISHIELD is part of this historic effort & to endorse its safety & efficacy, I join our health workers in taking the vaccine myself," Poonawalla wrote on the Twitter alongside a video of his taking the jab.

Covid vaccine Covishield is developed by Oxford University and British-Swedish company AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII). Adar Poonawalla is the CEO of the Serum Institute of India.

The market price of Covishield has been fixed at of Rs 1,000 per dose, according to Poonawalla. It will arrive in the private market after delivering the first 100 million doses to the Indian Government at Rs 200 per dose. The Government can purchase more at a concessional price later, as per the agreement. Poonawalla said Rs 200 is the cost price. The SII will make 70- 80 million doses per month.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launching the world's largest vaccination drive against the pandemic, lauded the unique contribution of the indigenous vaccine manufacturers Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech, the latter producing Covaxin.

Both Covishield and Covaxin were simultaneously launched. The first phase will cover one crore of health workers and two crores of frontline workers in the country. They are getting it free considering the sacrifices they are making. Around three lakh beneficiaries were scheduled to receive the vaccine each day of the first phase.

Covishield is a recombinant vaccine while Covaxin is whole virion inactivated corona virus.

In view of the propaganda against its covid vaccine, Bharat Biotech, which developed Covaxin in collaboration with the ICMR, has offered compensation to recipients who develop serious side-effects after the vaccination.
