JAMMU, Jan 4: Kashmir was cut off from the rest of India on Monday as the Jammu-Srinagar highway was closed due to snowfall in the Valley. Thousands of vehicles have come to a standstill.
Snow clearance operations were going on. Most of the vehicles stranded were trucks carrying essential goods to the Valley. South Kashmir's Kulgam district received the highest snowfall with two to three feet of snow. In Anantnag, there was one foot to two feet snow. Water bodies like Dal Lake are frozen, so also water supplies.
The temperature in Srinagar dipped to minus 0.9 deg C. Most places around the Valley had below freezing temperature. Gulmarg tourist resort had minus 5 deg C and Pahalgam minus 6.7 deg Celsius.
The weather office said there will be more snowfall in south Kashmir, Gulmarg, Banihal-Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, Kistawar and Zanskar, Drass and in the higher reaches of Ladakh UT, over two days from Monday.
