279 UK travellers untraced in Telangana; 21 found positive for covid
Out of 937 UK travellers identified and tested in Telangana, 21 persons were found positive for covid. The results of the genomic tests will be known on Monday. Goa had 6 cases, Maharashtra 17 and AP 6. India suspended flights to and from the UK on December 22.

HYDERABAD, Dec 27: Two hundred and seventy nine flyers who had visited the UK and arrived at Hyderabad recently remain untraceable in violation of the Indian Health Ministry's advisory of last Tuesday asking the travellers who visited that country during November 25 to December 23 to provide their travel history to screen for transmission of the new mutated covid variant which is spreading fast there. India suspended flights to and from the UK on December 22.

The travellers who arrived between November 25 and December 8 were to be contacted by District Surveillance Officers and advised to self-monitor their health, as per the Ministry's order. Those who arrived in India between December 9 and December 23 were to undergo RT-PCR testing.

Telangana is now on high alert as 279 UK returnees are untraceable; 184 of them had given wrong phone numbers and addresses. Of the 184, 92 are from the neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, according to the police.

Out of 937 travellers identified and tested 21 persons were found positive for covid. The samples of those who underwent the test and turned out positive in Telangana have been sent to the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology for further genomic tests to determine the mutant.

Those who returned from Britain after November 25 to the State who have not been contacted so far have been advised to call on phones: 040-24651119 or WhatsApp to 9154170960.

Goa reported 16 cases of infection among passengers from the UK during the period while Maharashtra has a total of 17 cases detected so far, and Kerala 8, Uttar Pradesh 8, Karnataka 1 and Andhra Pradesh 6. Results of the genomic tests done for new coronavirus mutant will be known on Monday.

According to Ministry officials, 119 cases of infections among travellers from Britain had been detected across the country in the past one week.

The new mutant has been found to be more transmissible and infecting young people more. Of 17 mutations detected, the most significant mutation is an N501Y mutation in the spike protein that the virus uses to bind to the human ACE2 receptor. It makes the virus more infectious, spreading more easily between people.
