Wistron claims Rs 437 cr loss after workers vandalise, loot iPhone factory in Karnataka
Taiwan tech company Wistron stated that 5,000 contract labourers and 2,000 unknown people vandalised its factory, and indulged in looting and arson, leading to huge losses in terms of equipment, mobile phones and other electronic goods.

BENGALURU, Dec 14: The Taiwan tech company, Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India), has stated that its iPhone plant in Kolar district in Karnataka has suffered a loss of Rs 437.40 cr in the violence and arson indulged in by the workers last Saturday.

The workers damaged the building and equipments and set vehicles on fire in a violent agitation over wage dispute. A large number of iPhones were also looted.

In a police complaint, the company said that 5,000 contract labourers and 2,000 unknown people indulged in the vandalism.

The company alleged that office equipment, mobile phones, production machinery and related equipment worth Rs 412.5 crore was lost. Infrastructure worth Rs 10 crore, Rs 60 lakh worth cars and golf carts, smartphones and other gadgets worth Rs 1.5 crore were also damaged or stolen, it said.

The police have arrested 149 people.

The police lathicharged the workers at the plant in Narsapura in Kolar district, 50 km east of Bengaluru, in order to disperse them.

The various political parties have sought a thorough probe into the violence and lamented that the investment-friendly image of the State has been dented.
