Nine Orissa cops killed in landmine explosion

     Bhubaneshwar: In a landmine blast triggered by the Maoists, nine police men of the orissa special strike force (OSSF) were killed in Jogi Pallur in Koraput district. According to Orissa Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj, the jeep in which the Orrissa Special Strike Force (OSSF) were traveling to Maoist affected Narayanptna to Laxmipur, was blown up using remote control detonators. The CRPF personnel who rushed to the spot after the incidents also came under fire from the Maoists.

Shiney Ahuja remanded to judicial custody till July 2 Top

     Mumbai: Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, who has been accused of raping his maid at his residence on Saturday, was on Thursday remanded to judicial custody till July 2 by a local Mumbai court. The actor is not entitled to apply for bail. This order from the Andheri court comes after he was earlier remanded in police custody for three days. The Public prosecution had earlier said they would seek extension of the actor''s custody adding there was enough evidence to prove the actor guilty. Earlier, medical reports had confirmed that Ahuja's maid was indeed raped. He will undergo DNA test. The police arrested Ahuja on Monday after preliminary medical tests on the girl confirmed sexual assault. A forensic team visited the actor's house in suburban Oshiwara, where the alleged offence was committed, to try and obtain more evidence from the spot. The house was sealed by the police later. Ahuja was questioned for the third day in succession by police even as police was contemplating to subject him to DNA test to gather corroborative evidence. On Tuesday, Mumbai police said the actor had admitted to making a mistake by having consensual sex with the maid who has levelled allegations of rape against him.

Qureshi says Pakistan did not seek time from India for curbing terrorism Top

     Islamabad: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Thursday that Pakistan did not ask for more time for crackdown on the terrorists involved in the Mumbai terror attacks. Qureshi said all the outstanding issues would be brought on the table in the next Indo-Pakistan talks at foreign secretaries level. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said on Wednesday that Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had sought more time to act against anti-India militants because Islamabad’s fight with the Taliban had entered a crucial phase. “He did mention to me the difficulties Pakistan is facing in controlling terrorism and asked us to bear with him, to give him some more time,” Singh told reporters on his way back from Russia’s Yekaterinburg, where the two leaders met on Tuesday.

Clinton fractures elbow, will undergo surgery Top

     Washington: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinon, who is scheduled to visit India next month, fractured her right elbow during in a fall Wednesday. Cheryl Mills, her chief of staff, said Clinton was on her way to the White House when she fell and injured her elbow. Clinton was treated at the George Washington University Hospital, and will undergo surgery to repair her elbow in the coming week, Fox News quoted Mills, as saying.

Notorious dacoit Ghanshyam killed in Chitrakoot Top

     Chitrakoot (Uttar Pradesh): Notorious dacoit Ghanshyam Kewat alias Nanhu was shot dead by Uttar Pradesh police during a fierce three-day gun battle in Jamauli village of Chitrakoot district. Police surrounded the area three days ago after learning about the presence of the criminal and his gang. Uttar Pradesh Police had announced a reward of 50,000 on Ghanshyam and on his gang. Earlier, there were reports that the dacoits might have escaped the police dragnet. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Vikram Singh said, the encounter is still on and is expected to continue till the evening. Additional forces have been sent to the spot, which is around 120 kilometers from Allahabad. Company commander PAC Beni Madhav Singh and Constables Shamim and Iqbal were killed in the encounter, while IG VK Gupta, DIG SK Singh and STF personnel Navendra Singh and Akram, Dileep Kumar Tiwari and Rajendra Singh were injured. IG Gupta and DIG Singh who received bullet injuries in the lower abdomen were airlifted to Lucknow for treatment. DGP Vikram Singh said, utmost care was being taken during the encounter to protect villagers, their property and livestock The dacoits were using .303 rifles, double and single barrel of .312 bore and hand grenades, Singh said. Singh said it was a "residual gang" of dacoit Baccha Kewat, who was killed earlier by police. He said that teams of Special Task Force (STF), Special Operation Group (SOG), and police of the adjoining districts have been put on alert.
