SARAWAK

Located on the south-western side of Borneo, Sarawak, the largest of Malaysian states, has a history of heroic adventure  and romance, piracy and rebellion. The Sultan of Brunei, for instance, made James Brooke, an English adventurer, the ruler of Sarawak in 1841 for the assistance he received in quelling a rebellion.

The places of interest in Sarawak are: Sarawak Museum, one of Asia's best,  Fort Margheria, Sunday Market (Pasas Minggu), Sarawak Cultural Village ( a major tourist attraction known as Living Village), caves, rain forests, mountains, mighty rivers, Dayak tribes and their longhouses. A longhouse is a whole village of a community under one long roof. They welcome visitors to stay with. Human remains dating back to 40,000 years are said to have been found in Niah caves in Niah National Park. Another one, Sarawak chamber, is said to be the largest cave in the world. The Clear Water Cave and the Deer Cave are other fascinating caves.

Tourists can go on safari in rivers like Skrang, Lemanak and Batang Ai. It  is a holiday hit. Cottage industries offer memorable souvenirs. Pottery making is a popular industry in Sarawak. It also produces high grade black and white pepper. The Capital is Kuching.

HOW TO REACH: Regular flights connect the Capital city, Kuching, to other places. Cars, chartered planes, boats and helicopters can be hired for travel between towns. Taxis are also available for negotiated fare.
