News in detail from MALAYSIA
The main Malaysian newspapers are Utusan Malaysia, the Star and the Malay Mail. All of them are online. The papers have supplements useful for tourists. They also cover local issues, politics, business, entertainment and culture. Altthough a Muslim country, the people are much liberal in matters of fashion, movies and other entertainments. In the city, they are especially crazy for Indian films and songs. The papers also list accommodation, shopping, bargains, holidays, vacations, resorts, property, stock market etc. The largest circulated among them, Utusan Malaysia, is an English and Malay language newspaper. It started publication in Singapore in 1939. It was popular as it did a yeoman service in the British period, by highlighting provincial interests. At that time Utusan Malaysia was known as Utusan Melayu. All the publications of Utusan Malaysia shifted the offices to Kuala Lumpur in 1958 after the country got independence from Britain. The Malay's favourite paper today, Utusan Malaysia carries wideranging reports of culture, music, entertainment and fashion, apart from current affairs and news, noteworthy in the context of the society being more traditionally Islamic. It became the first online newspaper, 'Utusan Malaysia On-Line'. According to a survey conducted on Malaysian publications by AC Nielson, Utusan Malaysia is the highest circulated paper in the country with a readership of 1,497,000. Mingguan Malaysia is a sister publication of Utusan Malaysia.
