NEW DELHI: The annual Urs, or religious fair, of Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya began in the Capital on Saturday, June 29. Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya was a renowned 12th century Indian Sufi saint who spread the message of love and brotherhood. A fair called "Urs" is held every year to mark his death anniversary. Urs this year began in the traditional style with rendition of Qawwalis, devotional chorus songs, marking his 698th anniversary. A large number of pilgrims, irrespective of their faith and religion, throng the tomb of the saint every year to pay homage. The tomb, decorated with flowers, glitters amidst the large gathering of people who offer prayers. "On this special occasion, we pray to the Almighty that with the blessing of his Holiness Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya, may there always be peace in our country. May communal harmony prevail and may our country prosper. May Allah always bless this land. Nowhere in this world will one find the kind of communal unity and brotherhood that is there in this country," said Syed Ghulam Chishti, a Sufi priest from Ajmer, another renowned centre of Sufi cult. "He is for everyone. It is very important for a man to be a human being first. Religion alone is not enough. The Quran talks about Rabb-ul-Alami which means Lord of the Universe. He is not God of any particular religion. And every one gets his blessings here," said Harpal Singh, a Sikh devotee. Sufism was a reform movement of the 16th century against orthodox Hinduism and Islam. It believed in mysticism and preached the worship of God through devotional singing. -ANI |
