Women fast and pray for their husbands Amritsar: Women across northern India on Tuesday celebrated 'Karva Chauth', a traditional festival for the well-being of their husbands. Applying henna is an integral part of the festival. Women get intricate designs applied on their hands. A housewife in Amritsar said that even unmarried women get henna designs in the belief that they will get good husbands. For the married it is an expression of love for their husbands. It is a festival celebrated throughout India. Seeing the rage for henna designs, henna artists have started experimenting with artificial colours. Although the chemicals used in the henna for colours can be harmful to the skin. On the day of Karva Chauth, women fast. The fast, observed from sunrise to sunset, is broken only after the moon rise. The festival, which falls about nine days before Diwali, is considered very important by married women. Bangles are also in great demand as they are a symbol of prosperity and zest for life. The festival is particularly special for a newly-wed woman who decks up in her bridal finery and many visit beauty saloons to look their best. On this occasion, women receive expensive gifts from their husbands and relatives.
