Women Observe Karva Chauth
(October 25, 2002)

NEW DELHI: The city bustled with activity on Friday, October 25, as married Hindu women celebrated the annual festival of Karva Chauth. On this day women observe strict fast from sunrise to sunset and do not take even a drop of water. It is broken only after worshipping the moon which rises around 9 pm. The occasion comes about nine days before the festival of Diwali.

The ritual is an expression of love between man and wife. Wife prays for her husband's long life and prosperity. Though it is a thing of the past, now-a-days both man and wife pray for each other. Among the newly married couples these days, the men also keep fast for the longevity of their wives.

Karva Chauth is particularly special for a newly-wed woman who gets decked up in her bridal finery. Women get intricate henna (herbal colour) designs applied on their palms before they get down to the actual rituals. Bangle sellers do brisk business. Fasting, now observed even in modern educated families, has become a symbol of the sentiment a woman has for her husband. Women receive gifts from their husbands and relatives.
